    Tombland, Norwich
At the western entrance of the Cathedral Close, this was the Civic Centre and original marketplace of Anglo-Saxon Norwich.

Its situation suggests the name derives from “thum” or “tomb”, meaning open space.

Norwich residents fiercely defended their right to use this space, especially against the early monks of the cathedral. Fairs were held here at Easter and Christmas, and markets throughout the year.

It became cluttered with semi-permanent stalls after the second world war, but these were taken down in the late 1960s after a furious legal battle, which the council lost.
