This is the Cathedral Diocese of East Anglia, serving the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire along with the Unitary Authority of Peterborough.
St John the Baptist Cathedral stands on one of the highest points in Norwich. The building of the church commenced in 1882 and was the inspiration of Henry Fitzalan Howard, the 15th Duke of Norfolk. He gave £200,000 for the construction of a church offered as an act of thanksgiving for his happy marriage to his wife, Lady Flora. She is commemorated in St Joseph's Chapel, where each of the windows depicts one of her names. This chapel is used for weekday Mass, morning and evening.
The architecture of the church follows the Early English style of the 13th Century, with liberal use of deep grey Frosterly marble from Durham.
As you look around, enjoy the beautiful stained glass windows which are particularly fine. Particular mention should be made of the Walsingham Chapel in the North Transept. The windows there tell the story of the foundation of the Shrine, its destruction at the Reformation and its re-establishment in 1934.
As well as being the Cathedral, the church serves the local Parish, covering the southern part of the City of Norwich and surrounding area.
